Research suggests that many choose risk in order to build self-efficacy, the belief that they can handle a challenge. A key motivation is the sense of control and focus that comes from working through a difficult situation. This is linked to the brain’s reward system, in which dopamine supports focus and, in some cases, a feeling of calm even in physically risky conditions.The Psychology of Risk Pursuit익스트림 스포츠를 하는 사람들은 단순히 위험을 찾는 것이 아니다. 연구에 따르면 많은 이들이 ‘해낼 수 있다’는 자기효능감을 얻기 위해 위험을 선택한다. 중요한 동기는 어려운 상황을 다뤄 내며 느끼는 통제감과 몰입이다. 이는 뇌의 보상 체계와 관련이 있어, 도파민이 몰입을 돕고 신체적으로 위험한 상황에서도 오히려 차분함을 느끼게 하기도 한다.

Apex NomadsSome people look for experiences close to the edge of their limits, while others look for excitement within carefully planned risks. In this project they are called ‘Apex Nomads,’ and HALE was designed with them in mind.Apex Nomads한계에 가까운 경험을 찾는 사람도 있고, 신중하게 계획한 위험 안에서 즐거움을 찾는 사람도 있다. 이 프로젝트에서는 그들을 ‘에이펙스 노마드(Apex Nomads)’라 부르고, HALE을 그들을 위해 디자인했다.

HALE | Propulsion UnitThe HALE propulsion system is a hybrid thruster mounted on the back of a wingsuit. Eight segmented nozzles adjust thrust and direction quickly, giving the pilot finer control in the air.HALE | Propulsion UnitHALE 추진 시스템은 윙슈트 등판에 장착하는 하이브리드 추진기다. 여덟 개로 나뉜 노즐이 추력과 방향을 빠르게 조절해, 공중에서 더 세밀하게 움직일 수 있게 한다.

Upper | Electric Propulsion FanThe electric fan on top handles horizontal movement, steady thrust and changes of direction. Hybrid Propulsion SystemThe hybrid system divides the work between the two: the electric fan for horizontal control and steady thrust, the jet engines for vertical lift and acceleration. Using both is intended to extend flight time while keeping the unit responsive.Hybrid Propulsion System하이브리드 시스템은 두 장치의 역할을 나눈다. 전기 팬은 수평 제어와 안정적인 추력을, 제트 엔진은 수직 상승과 가속을 맡는다. 둘을 함께 써서 비행 시간을 늘리면서도 반응성을 유지하도록 했다.

HALE | Controlling UnitInstead of a fixed arm-mounted controller, the HALE control unit reads gestures through four sensors, one on each wrist and one on the fingers of each hand. This allows flight direction and speed to be controlled more intuitively.HALE | Controlling Unit팔에 고정하는 컨트롤러 대신, HALE 컨트롤 유닛은 양 손목과 양손 손가락에 하나씩 달린 네 개의 센서로 제스처를 읽는다. 이를 통해 비행 방향과 속도를 더 직관적으로 조절할 수 있다.

Personalized ControllingThe gesture set is tuned with specialists in the studio and adjusted for each pilot. Rather than learning a fixed set of gestures, pilots use controls fitted to the way they move.Personalized Controlling제스처 세트는 스튜디오에서 전문가와 함께 조율해 조종사마다 맞춘다. 정해진 제스처를 익히는 대신, 각자의 움직임에 맞춘 조작 방식을 쓴다.

One System, Three AxesHALE combines the hybrid propulsion unit, the wrist-and-finger controller and the personalized gesture set into one system. Mounted on a wingsuit, it is meant to let the pilot climb, glide and turn across three axes, extending extreme sports into the air.One System, Three AxesHALE은 하이브리드 추진 유닛, 손목·손가락 컨트롤러, 개인화된 제스처 세트를 하나의 시스템으로 묶는다. 윙슈트에 장착해 세 개의 축으로 오르고, 활공하고, 방향을 바꿀 수 있도록 구상했고, 이를 통해 익스트림 스포츠를 공중으로 넓혀 보고자 했다.

The Name HALEThe name comes from Hale, our family’s brown poodle. He is small but energetic, and often jumps higher than you would expect. When he leaps, his ears lift like wings, and that light, fearless movement reminded me of a jetpack taking off.Hale’s curiosity and courage felt close to what this project is about, so I named the flight unit after him.The Name HALE이름은 우리 집 갈색 푸들 ‘헤일’에게서 가져왔다. 헤일은 작지만 활발해서 생각보다 높이 뛰어오르곤 한다. 뛰어오를 때 귀가 날개처럼 들리는데, 그 가볍고 겁 없는 움직임이 이륙하는 제트팩을 떠올리게 했다.헤일의 호기심과 용기가 이 프로젝트가 담고 싶은 것과 닮아 있어, 비행 유닛에 그 이름을 붙였다.
